Registration Options
AAOS recognises supervision training programs that meet the AAOS Training Standards and are delivered by qualified training providers.
Training providers are invited to apply for registration of their program(s) with AAOS under the designation of a Recognised Supervision Training Program (RSTP).
There are two categories of recognition available:
Foundational program – covering the theoretical components and limited supervised practice components.
Comprehensive program – covering both theoretical foundations and substantial supervised practice components.
Category 1: Foundational Program
This category applies to programs that provide foundational supervision training, incorporating theoretical learning and a limited supervised practical component, delivered over a minimum duration of six months.
Graduates of a recognised Foundational Course will be required to complete additional supervision practice over a two-year period in order to be eligible for full supervisor registration (refer to AAOS Membership Guidelines for further details).
Category 2: Comprehensive Program
This category applies to programs that provide comprehensive supervision training, incorporating theoretical learning and a substantial supervised practical component, typically delivered over a two-year period.
Graduates of a recognised Comprehensive Course are eligible to apply for full supervisor registration upon completion, in accordance with AAOS membership requirements (see AAOS Membership Guidelines for details).
Further Information
For comprehensive guidelines on applying for recognition of a Supervision Training Program, please refer to the AAOS Training Standards Handbook.

Commencing in 2026, for renewal, all recognised training programs will be required to re-submit their materials for formal assessment and recognition every two years. Program recognition will remain valid for a two-year period, subject to approval.
- Participants enrolled in a comprehensive training program may apply for Associate Membership with AAOS, provided they meet the specified requirements (see Associate Membership criteria).
- Trainers and supervisors involved in the program are encouraged to apply for AAOS membership at the appropriate level, based on their qualifications and experience.
- The annual fee for recognition of a training program by AAOS is currently under review.
- Should there be any changes to AAOS training standards, training organisations will be notified directly and provided with a transition period to implement the changes.
