Category 1
Theory and Practice (Full Program)
For a full program recognition, the content of a supervisory training program must contain the following elements:
- 72 hrs of supervisory theory including a variety of models of supervision, and a minimum of 25/30 hrs of experiential learning. (Experiential learning must include creative learning such as role plays, discussions, practice groups with fellow group participants, modelling by trainers, using audio-visual resources, feedback activities, using creative methods).
- Minimum of 15 hrs of supervision on supervisory practice by a qualified external Supervisor during/post training (NOT a trainer)
- Evidence of 80 hours of supervisory practice provided over a minimum of two years during and/or post supervisory training.
Note: Documentation will be required for all of the above.
Note: Depending on participant experience prior to training, graduates may need to complete further requirements before acceptance to full supervisory membership with AAOS – please see Supervisor Membership requirements.
Note: In addition, an outline of the content of the supervisory training program must include a clear statement of:
- Philosophy underpinning the program
- Learning Outcomes
- Appropriate Student Competencies.
- Trainer Credentials
Category 2
Theory Only
For a ‘Theory Only’ recognition, the content of a supervisory training program must contain the following elements:
- 72 hrs of supervisory theory including a variety of models of supervision, and a minimum of 25/30 hrs of experiential learning. (Experiential learning must include creative learning such as role plays, discussions, practice groups with fellow group participants).
Note: In addition, an outline of the content of the supervisory training program must include a clear statement of:
- Philosophy underpinning the program
- Learning Outcomes
- Appropriate Student Competencies.
- Trainer Credentials
Note: Documentation will be required for all of the above.
Note: Depending on participant experience prior to training, graduates may need to complete further requirements before acceptance to full supervisory membership with AAOS – please see Supervisor Membership requirements.
Further Information
- During the participant’s training period they may apply to become a member of AAOS as an Associate Member (see requirements).
- Trainers and Supervisors in the training program may also take up membership of AAOS at the appropriate level.
- The fee for recognition of a training program recognised by AAOS is $440.00 per annum.
- Training Programs must register each year with full documentation.
- Audits are carried out regularly to ensure standards.
- Any change in training standards will be communicated directly to training organisations with a transition period.
